The Power of a Truly Collaborative Therapeutic Relationship

When Catherine “Katie” Keech, LMFT, wrote that my memoir offers “a lovely first-person description of how it feels when both clinician and client can sit in extreme pain together to create an environment where the isolation is broken, which allows healing to not only begin, but be sustained,” she named the heart of my story—and the heart of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB).

From that lens, my own healing emerged in those moments when two nervous systems—mine and Dr. Siegel’s—could stay present with overwhelming experience. Connection became the catalyst for integration. Safety wasn’t something I was told about; it was something I felt in real time.

What made the work possible was his steady, grounded, attuned presence. He didn’t stand outside the confusion or try to organize it from a distance. He sat with me in it. That attunement quieted my threat responses and made it possible for my mind to hold experiences that had once felt unholdable. What had been chaotic became something we could navigate together.

Therapy wasn’t something done to me. It was something we did together.

And in my own process with dissociation, that relational space mattered more than anything else. It was the co-regulation, the shared understanding, the willingness to stay with whatever rose to the surface that allowed fragmentation, fear, and emerging clarity to be held long enough for healing to unfold.

If “A Brilliant Adaptation” makes that collaborative bond visible, then it reflects the core of what made my own healing possible.
